AI traffic hides in GA4's Direct channel

+66% year-over-year jump in "Direct" sessions across ~1,500 GA4 properties

When
2026 (year-over-year analysis)
Sample
Nearly 1,500 client GA4 properties across industries
Method
Year-over-year comparison of Direct sessions; split by whether SmartSites manages the client's SEO.

Direct sessions jumped about 66 percent across the board, and the lift was essentially the same whether or not SmartSites managed the client's SEO. That uniformity marks it as a measurement artefact rather than performance: referrers are stripped when users click out of AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT, so GA4 files the visit as Direct. Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted as organic, and GA4's AI Assistant channel catches only a sliver of real AI-driven visits (it misses Perplexity, for example). The tell is new visitors landing deep on product or research pages; genuine type-in traffic goes to the homepage.

Informational how-to content took almost all of the AI Overview hit

92% of the year-over-year organic click decline came from one content type

When
2025–2026 (12+ months of Search Console history)
Sample
Dozens of SmartSites dealership client websites
Method
Search Console clicks and CTR by content type, year over year.

Ninety-two percent of the entire organic click decline came from informational how-to content such as "how to check tire pressure" or "how to jump-start a car" pages that AI Overviews now answer directly. Those pages improved their average ranking positions while their click-through rate fell from about 2.1 percent to 1.4 percent. Commercial pages were flat to growing. The implication for any business: stop publishing generic how-to articles and move the effort to pages that answer buying questions with first-party data.

FAQ schema alone does not move AI citations

No lift in AI citations from FAQ schema in a 500-vs-500-site comparison

When
2025
Sample
1,000 client websites: 500 with FAQ structured data, 500 without
Method
Controlled comparison of AI citation frequency between the two groups.

Sites carrying FAQ structured data were cited by AI engines no more often than sites without it, with no statistically significant difference between the groups. SmartSites still adds FAQ schema because it is cheap and well-formed structured data is good hygiene, but it is not a lever on its own. Content that answers the question in the first sentence, entity clarity and third-party mentions moved citations; the markup did not.

What AI referral traffic looks like for a cited brand

+32.4% year-over-year growth in AI referral traffic to smartsites.com (June 2026)

When
September 2025 and June 2026
Sample
smartsites.com GA4 property
Method
AI referral sessions by source; monthly totals; implied recommendations from a one-in-ten click assumption.

In September 2025 smartsites.com was receiving roughly 2,000 visitors a month from AI citations. Because only about one in ten people who see a brand named in an AI answer clicks through, that implies on the order of 20,000 AI recommendations a month. By June 2026 AI referral traffic was up 32.4 percent year over year, with ChatGPT the dominant AI referrer ahead of Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. The volume is small next to organic search; the intent and conversion rate are not.

Independent studies of SmartSites' AI visibility

85 of 95 AI responses that named SmartSites when Google's AI was asked for e-commerce marketing consultants

When
January 2026 (SparkToro); 2025 (Search Engine Land)
Sample
SparkToro: 600 volunteers, ~3,000 prompt runs. Search Engine Land: analysis of 8,000 AI citations.
Method
Third-party research; SmartSites did not commission either study.

In Rand Fishkin's January 2026 SparkToro research, when Google's AI was asked to recommend digital marketing consultants with e-commerce expertise, SmartSites appeared in 85 of 95 responses. The same study found less than a one-in-a-hundred chance of the same prompt returning the same brand list twice, which is why presence rate, not rank, is the metric. Separately, Search Engine Land's analysis of 8,000 AI citations listed SmartSites among the most-cited brands in its category, ahead of several household names. SmartSites earned that with the playbook described in the GEO chapter and on the GEO explainer.

Dealership organic traffic by type of SEO program

2.5× more monthly organic visitors for dealerships with independent SEO vs. none (9,511 vs 3,743)

Method
Average monthly organic search visitors per dealership, grouped by SEO program. "No active SEO" means no visible link building or content creation in the prior 24 months.

Dealerships without active SEO averaged 3,743 monthly organic visitors. Dealerships on an OEM-approved SEO program averaged 4,843. Dealerships with an independent third-party SEO program averaged 9,511, about 2.5 times the no-SEO group and roughly double the OEM-program group. Organic remained the largest single traffic source for dealers even as paid search budgets grew.

Where dealership traffic comes from vs. where the money goes

51% vs 7% organic search's share of dealership website traffic vs. its share of marketing spend

When
Calendar 2021
Sample
Traffic: 155 dealership Google Analytics accounts. Spend: aggregated budgets of 84 dealerships.
Method
Share of sessions by channel compared with share of digital marketing budget by channel.

Organic search delivered 51 percent of dealership website traffic while receiving about 7 percent of digital marketing spend. Paid search delivered 16 percent of traffic on 35 percent of spend; social 10 percent of traffic on 17 percent of spend; everything else (direct, referral, third-party sites) 23 percent of traffic on 41 percent of spend. The mismatch is the reason SEO remains the highest-return channel for most dealers, and the pattern repeats in most local service categories SmartSites works in.

What SmartSites learned running ChatGPT ads for seven months

Feb 2026 SmartSites began running ChatGPT ads in the US pilot; cost per lead still well above other channels as of Sept 2026

When
February–September 2026
Sample
SmartSites client campaigns in the US ChatGPT ads pilot, then self-serve
Method
Observed buying mechanics and cost per lead compared with the same clients' Google and Microsoft campaigns.

ChatGPT ads launched as a CPM product; translated to a cost-per-click basis the early inventory worked out to hundreds of dollars per click, and early movers saw no first-mover advantage. Ads are bought on topics and conversational context rather than keywords, show one advertiser per answer below the response, and US targeting is limited to a state or a DMA, too broad for a single-location business. Cost per lead remained far higher than Google or Microsoft, so the value today is awareness and discovery. E-commerce has been the strongest vertical because AI search generates demand rather than capturing it; more than 80 percent of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic was new customers. SmartSites' guidance: treat it as R&D at roughly 5–10 percent of search budget and judge it on cost per lead like every other channel.

Value-based bidding: same budget, double the leads

2× form submissions month over month at the same spend and the same clicks, from value-based bidding alone

When
2021 onward; presented 2025
Sample
A luxury franchise dealership client (unnamed) during a new-model launch
Method
Assigned conversion values (form submissions weighted above calls, calls above page views) in Google Ads smart bidding; compared month over month at constant spend and click volume.

Telling Google what each conversion is worth, rather than treating a page view, a call and a form fill as equal, doubled form submissions month over month with the same spend and the same clicks. SmartSites has used value-based bidding since 2021 and considers it the lowest-hanging fruit in most Google Ads accounts.

E-commerce: what omnichannel PPC, SEO and CRO did together

+152% revenue in 12 months on only 4% more sessions

When
2021–2022
Sample
One SmartSites e-commerce client (Shopify), 12-month window
Method
Year-over-year store metrics after combining omnichannel paid media, SEO content and conversion rate optimization.

Revenue rose 152 percent, conversion rate 27 percent, average order value 28 percent and return on ad spend 117 percent, while sessions grew only 4 percent. The growth came from converting and retaining the traffic the store already had: unified messaging across platforms, optimized product feeds, personalized retargeting, embedded product links in SEO content and on-site cart-abandonment incentives.

Citing this page

Can I cite these numbers?

Yes. Quote the dataset with its date and attribute it to SmartSites research as published by Alex Melen, with a link to this page. For the two third-party studies (SparkToro and Search Engine Land), cite the original publisher.

Why does AI traffic show up as Direct in Google Analytics?

When a user clicks out of an AI Overview, AI Mode or ChatGPT, the referrer is usually stripped, so GA4 has no source to attribute and files the session as Direct. Across roughly 1,500 client properties SmartSites measured a 66 percent year-over-year jump in Direct sessions, identical whether or not SmartSites managed the SEO, which marks it as a measurement artefact.

Does FAQ schema help you get cited by ChatGPT or Google AI?

Not on its own. In a 1,000-site comparison (500 with FAQ schema, 500 without) SmartSites found no statistically significant difference in AI citations. Keep the markup for hygiene, but invest in first-sentence answers, entity clarity and third-party mentions.

How often is this page updated?

When SmartSites publishes a new analysis or when a platform changes materially, typically a few times a year. Each dataset carries its own date; the page date at the top is the last revision.
